The second largest city in Croatia. Combine the best of Dalmatia's laid back beach vibe with commerce and night life.
A popular destination for travelers in Croatia, Split was home to the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Seventeen centuries ago, Diocletian built the vast palace complex on Split's waterfront that still stands today, in order to retire near his hometown. Several of our accommodation options sit within the ancient walls. There's now an embankment in front of the palace, but the water used to go right up to the wall. It's on this man-made strip of land that you'll find the Riva, a bustling pedestrian promenade. This will be one of the highlights of your holiday in Split. You'll also find Split's UNESCO-listed Old Town within the walls. It's a pedestrian-only maze that is easy, but fun, to get lost in. Who knows what romantic cafés you'll find in the narrow streets? To get the most out of your time visiting Split, we recommend taking a tour with a local guide.

What we love about Split

Antonija

Local Teams Specialist & Senior Adriatic Destination Expert

I love Split, not only because I was born there and have many nice memories, but because I find it Croatia's most unique city, and a place with real soul. Unique for its temperament, atmosphere, energy, and sense of humor. Split is a pretty compact town, so within the short walking distance of its core - impressive Diocletian's Palace - you can find the forested Marjan Hill park, many beaches, and enjoy easy access to many Dalmatian islands. You can find pretty much anything in Split.

Ivana

Team Leader for Greece & Turkey

Split's hustle and bustle give it a true charm. Everything is loud, and the people are always friendly and smiling. Getting lost in the 'ghetto' as the locals like to call the center, is the best way to explore the town. Have a walk up to Marjan Hill for some amazing views, and treat yourself with a cold beer on Matejuska Pier while watching the sunset.

Lidija

Senior Trip Planner

What I love most about Split is that it's a city that has it all. A long and interesting history, ancient monuments, a small city centre built in a traditional stone style, but at the same time, the advantages of a big city - easily accessible transportation to anywhere, great shopping places, night clubs, and markets. Want a beach day? The beach is ten minutes away. Want a hiking/biking nature day? Marjan Hill is around the corner. Most of all, I love the city atmosphere and the relaxed way of life; the most used words here are "take it slow" and "no problem."

Where to stay in Split

With one exception, the Le Meridien resort, all the hand-picked Split accommodation options we offer are either inside or very close to the walls of Diocletian's Palace, with some of them even making use of the centuries-old stone walls of the Palace itself to form its own walls. Talk about staying in a piece of history! Our accommodation choices in Split range from cozy, centrally located 3-star hotels and apartments, to B&Bs and boutique 4-star hotels in historic buildings, plus a 5-star seafront resort for those who prefer to be away from the hum of the city. Once we start preparing your customized itinerary, we will present our recommended options for you to select from.

Things to do in Split

Split is ideally placed for an overnight stop to and from Hvar, and ferries leave from Split heading in many directions, but stay a little longer and you'll be surprised at what lays beyond those historic city walls. Day trips to Krka and Plitvice National Parks, rafting on the Cetina river, or even a day-long boat trip to several nearby islands are all options worth considering. When we send you your customized itinerary, you will be able to choose additional excursions to include in your vacation package.
