Ljubljana enjoys a central position, making it the ideal base for exploring the rest of Slovenia. It is a crossroads culturally due to its location. On one hand, you can see its Central European influences, because of its time within the Austro-Hungarian empire, in the city's architecture and language. On the other hand there is a strong Mediterranean and Balkan influence which is brought out in their laid back approach and the city's café culture. People are often surprised how westernized and advanced Slovenia is putting it more in a class with its Austrian neighbors than its Eastern European and Balkan counterparts. The surrounding areas of the city are packed with natural beauty and cultural sights bearing witness to the city's dynamic history. There is diverse range of places to satisfy culinary desires as the local cuisine is also heavily influenced by its neighbors in all directions. Wine lovers will find Slovenia to be a hidden gem. One of the best ways we have found to get to know Ljubljana and Slovenian cuisine at the same time is on a food tour, which will take you on a gastronomic tour of the whole country while walking around the center. The city layout is tourist friendly as the Old Town has an ever expanding pedestrian zone and a great way to see Ljubljana is by bike taking advantage of the numerous bike lanes spread out across the city.

Day 1

Day 1 - Arrival in Ljubljana

When you arrive at Ljubljana's airport, you'll be greeted and taken to your centrally located accommodations. Duration of the drive is about 30 minutes.

Castle Views and a Lovely Dinner

Suggestion to explore on your own

Start your stay in Ljubljana by taking a funicular or a short walk to reach Ljubljana Castle, offering stunning views of the city below and the mountains beyond. Don't miss the museum, and if possible, catch a sunset from the castle grounds, especially the tower. End your day on a high note with dinner in one of the charming restaurants within the castle walls. We are confident that you'll go to bed feeling happy and in love with "the loved one," the literal translation of "Ljubljana." On the other hand, if you're still experiencing jet lag and seeking complete relaxation before your upcoming adventures, we recommend taking a short walk by the Ljubljanica River and having dinner at Julija Restaurant. Remember to make a reservation or let your local destination expert handle it for you; they will be delighted to assist!

You’ll discover its baroque and Secession architecture, along with the works of the architect Joze Plecnik. You’ll walk across the center's charming bridges and through the open market and enter the impressive cathedral. Your guide will take you through Old Town, and along the banks of the river Ljubljanica. Learn all about the legend of the city's origin and visit the main attractions. By the end of the tour, you'll understand how Ljubljana, "The Beloved One," earned its name.

Suggestion to explore on your own

Today we suggest going undercover and becoming a Ljubljančan/Ljubljančanka for a day. Try to embrace as much of Ljubljana's atmosphere as possible and don’t worry about revealing yourself as a newbie. Start by venturing into Vodnik Square, where you’ll find an excellent central market with fresh fruits and vegetables, local specialties and crafts that make wonderful souvenirs. Around the corner from the market, find a bar at the riverbank to drink some coffee. It is obligatory in Ljubljana to drink at least two coffees a day. Once you’ve fed your bodies, it’s time to feed your soul, which is why we encourage you to discover great architecture all around you and get lost into the streets of Ljubljana.

Drive to Slovenia's Gorgeous Gorges and Lakes

Suggestion to explore on your own

Slovenia is relatively small, so it’s easy enough to explore, especially with a rental car. From Ljubljana, our top recommendation is a day trip to Lake Bled and the stunning surrounding area. Here you can spend the afternoon enjoying the gorgeous glacial lake and medieval castle situated on an island. Other places of note are Vintgar Gorge, a 1.6 kilometer-long gorge with steep depths and vertical walls which we recommend visiting after seeing the center of Bled. Be sure to try the rich local cream cake! After the gorge, you could visit another even more picturesque and peaceful lake, Bohinj in the heart of the Triglav National Park before heading back to Ljubljana.

Day 4 - Traveling to Rovinj by Rental Car

A morning start is recommended for your drive to Rovinj as there are some fascinating stops along the way. About halfway there, we suggest touring the Postojna caves as well as visiting the nearby Predjama Castle. Built into the side of a cliff, it is a truly marvelous sight. Duration of the direct drive to Rovinj is just over 2 hours.

Rovinj used to go by Rovigno, and to Italian-speakers it still does. This city was once part of the Republic of Venice, which is evident from the street names in Italian to the Venetian architectural flourishes, such as the bell tower that crowns the town. This laid-back spot has a full cultural calendar, with numerous festivals taking place in the warmer months. We’ll help you get to know the local culture, with possible activities like a local wine tasting, a fish cooking masterclass with a local chef, or a truffle hunting adventure in nearby Croatia. Then, to work up an appetite for your next delicious meal, you could rent bikes and cruise through the breathtaking Zlatni Rt Park. You’ll definitely want to visit the local market too. History buffs will love visiting the local cultural heritage museum, which gives great insight into the region. When you’re ready to get in the car, a day trip to Pula is always fun. This busy port town hosts a large market packed with delectable local specialities, and also boasts a Roman amphitheater. You could even arrange a full-day private tour through the gorgeous region of Istria, where more delights await you inland.

Day 4 - Arrival in Rovinj

After your sightseeing stops, you'll probably arrive in Rovinj in the late afternoon, a good time to check in to your accommodation. Relax after your drive with an evening stroll around Old Town and the lively harbor area.

Romantic Rovinj

Suggestion to explore on your own

This Venetian seaside town is one of the most romantic spots on our map, with winding alleyways, a picturesque old port and several islands within easy reach. It’s the perfect base for enjoying more exotic activities like truffle hunting, or a private wine tour of local wineries. Rovinj is not far from the Istrian countryside, where you can take a day trip, visiting quaint villages and lovely local taverns. It’s all up to you here, whether you want to enjoy energetic outdoor activities like cycling, or even explore one of Europe’s most unique regions. One of our favorite sunset spots in the whole of Croatia is the bell tower of St. Euphemia’s, the cathedral that stands watch over Rovinj.

You’ll see all the main attractions including the St. Euphemia Church, the town clock, and Balbi’s arch. The church is a stunning example of Baroque architecture and dominates Rovinj’s Old Town, as it is built on top of a hill. Inside you’ll see the preserved body of St. Euphemia from the 6th century. This orientational tour will introduce you to the rich history of Rovinj and all of Istria, as well as Italy’s influence on the region.

Istrian Self-Drive Tour

Suggestion to explore on your own

If you have traveled to Rovinj in a rental car, a self-driving tour of the surrounding region of Istria is an excellent way to spend a day. This is a place of romance and myth that is often compared with Tuscany. From the hills to the coasts you can see the best of the region on a pleasant drive, and also taste some of the local cuisine. The stops we recommend most are Pula, with its ancient Roman amphitheater, and the hill towns of Motovun and Groznjan. All three spots have a charm of their own and really show off the best of the region's architecture, landscape, and cuisine.

Discover Brijuni National Park

Suggestion to explore on your own

Today we suggest a visit to Brijuni National park, one of the most stunning in Croatia! Brijuni National Park consists of 14 islands and islets located on the western coast of Istria. From Rovinj centre there is about 30 minute drive to Fazana where you can easily take a 15 minutes boat ride to Brijuni. Visit Veliki Brijun amazing safari park where you can find some exotic Asian, African and South America animals running freely or check out more than 200 dinosaur footprints which have been discovered on the islands. You can also take an opportunity and swim, dive or just enjoy the sun and a perfect Mediterranean climate.

Day 7 - Traveling to Plitvice by Rental Car

Today we suggest an early start. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Plitvice Lakes National Park is about 4 hours away and you will want to arrive there by lunchtime so you can spend your whole afternoon exploring this magnificent natural wonder. Entrance fees to the national park must be booked online at least two days in advance. If you're looking for somewhere to stop along the way, then we would suggest an early lunch in the seaside town of Opatija, it has a style quite different to Rovinj, with a Vienna-on-the-Sea vibe.

Day 8 - Traveling to Split by Rental Car

The direct journey time is a little under three hours but there are some interesting stops on your way from Plitvice to Split today. The Roman Emperor Diocletian made Split his home in the 4th Century AD, building a vast palace complex on the waterfront that stands to this day. In fact several of the accommodation options we offer in Split are nestled inside its ancient walls. These days there is an embankment in front of Diocletian's palace but the water used to go right up to the main wall. It's on this man-made strip of land that you'll find the Riva, a pedestrian promenade bustling with life. Split's UNESCO listed Old Town is contained within these old walls and is a pedestrian-only maze that it is quite easy, but fun, to get lost in. Who know what romantic hidden cafés you might find in one of the narrow streets and alleyways? To get the best out of your time in Split, however, we recommend taking a tour with a local guide. Split is very well connected for flights, with an international airport a half hour drive away and is a popular stopping point for our guests on their way between Dubrovnik and the islands of Hvar, Vis, or Korcula, all easily reached by a ferry from Split's port. If you base yourself in Split for a few days, you will find it is also perfect located for visits to some of Croatia's most stunning national parks.

Our representative will then meet with you to answer any questions you have and to get you settled for the rest of your trip.

The Right Place for Ancient Times

Suggestion to explore on your own

The best way to get started in Split is to spend time on the former grounds of Diocletian's Palace. Visit Peristil, the palace's main square, sit on its ancient stairs, and enjoy the remarkable view. Or take a seat at a cafe on the square to order a glass of local wine and take it easy. If you need to stretch your legs, head on a pleasant walk on the West Coast and enjoy the light sea breeze and amazing view of the main Riva promenade and the Palace. On the West Coast (Zapadna Obala), you will discover an interesting fact about Split: it is considered the sportiest town in the world. Here, you will find the names of more than 80 Olympic winners from Split! Take your pick among the area's many bars for a delicious cocktail!

And if you're still craving different perspectives, why not hop on a boat from the Old Town harbor to Lokrum Island? It's just ten minutes away and is like a peaceful nature escape with peacocks, old monastery spots, and a gorgeous botanical garden surrounded by pine, cypress, and olive trees. A perfect way to wrap up your day in Dubrovnik!
