You're likely to start your customized tour in Switzerland's largest city, Zurich. The spotless Old Town, bisected by a river leading to Lake Zurich, is a real delight. Bern, the compact de facto capital, offers miles of covered arcades, quaint streets, and colorful homes, especially at its peninsula Old Town. Geneva, the "Protestant Rome," is now the "Capital of Peace". The city hosts the headquarters of the Red Cross and much of the UN. Technology old and new is represented by CERN's scientists and many of the country's watchmakers. All this in the shadow of Mont Blanc, the Alps' highest peak, and next to Lake Geneva, beloved by celebrities and wine connoisseurs.
Speaking of famous mountains, the village of Zermatt sits beneath the iconic Matterhorn. Only electric vehicles can visit, to prevent air pollution from smudging its perfect views. Another small town with an outsized impact, St. Moritz is the birthplace of Swiss winter tourism, as well as sports from the luge to the bobsled. All this made it a perfect host for two Winter Olympics. Although it has drawn pilgrims since the Middle Ages, glitzy St. Moritz is now famed for the jet-setting celebrities who make their own annual pilgrimages. Visit Interlaken for more of Switzerland's most beloved peaks. This resort town sits on an isthmus between two beautiful lakes, themselves surrounded by scenery and history. Interlaken is a great base for adventure, whether riding scenic trains up the Jungfrau and Schilthorn mountains, paragliding back down, rafting, canyoning, hiking, or exploring ice caves. You can take the Glacier Express, one of the world's most scenic train routes, between Zermatt and St Moritz, an eight-hour journey through three cantons.
Utterly charming Lucerne offers the kind of memorable mountain panorama you'd expect from a city in the Swiss center. The horizon is crowded with snow-capped peaks. But you'll most remember the Chapel Bridge and Water Tower, located on Lake Lucerne with the backdrop of Mount Pilatus. Lugano, the largest Italian city outside Italy, makes for a great base for day trips. Explore Lake Lugano's many charming towns and picturesque restaurants or visit Lake Como in Italy.
Switzerland offers more than enough to be enjoyed by itself, but the roof of Europe's central location makes it an easy addition to a continental tour. Jump on a train and you can be in Austria in two hours. Or hop across the Italian border from Lugano. All of our tours are custom and private, and we can provide trips that extend further into neighboring Italy, Austria, and Germany.
