For sweeping views of the city and plenty of hiking opportunities, visit the Uetliberg. This is Zurich's closest mountain, and a piece of greenery easily accessible by train. For a more stereotypically Swiss landscape, visit the nearby Appenzee, with its lush valleys dotted with small chalets, and scenic outlooks accessible by cable car. Seek out the Berggasthaus Aescher Wildkirchli, a 170-year old guesthouse built into a cliff and accessible by cable car. You can also get right up to the massive Rhine Falls, to feel its power, then visit the charming village of Stein am Rhein. Chur is another pleasant little town, with winding, car-free streets in the historic center. From Zurich, you can take a boat to Rapperswil, home to Europe's longest wooden bridge. Finally, if you head due east, you can visit Lichtenstein, to cross that country off your list, then make a stop at the more memorable UNESCO-listed St. Gallen, home to what was once one of medieval Europe's primary monasteries, and which hosts a 9th-century library which is not only one of Europe's oldest, but easily among its most beautiful.
