Where to stay in Florence

What we love about Florence
Senior Trip Planner
Florence is my favourite city in Italy (and I did visit most of them). It is small enough to be able to get around on foot and big enough to have every imaginable type of restaurant, bar and shop. Above all: art, art, art like nowhere else! On the streets, facades, churches, piazzas, museums, from architecture to music, from old to modern, this is a city you'll want to take your time in, and it will leave you with a permanent impression from the first minute.
Operations Executive
The cultural value and heritage of Florence is immeasurable. Classic Italian city what has everything to offer. The list of the museums and galleries and important fashion boutiques are endliess. You can't spend enough time there to explore everything and most probably you will arrive to the point when you will say: "I am not able to visit one more museum". Apart from the very touristy places, Florence has a more hidden and more interesting side. The other side of the Arno river, Oltrarno, San Nicolo or the area around the Piazza Santo Spirito. There are so many amazing hidden places, with kind locals, shoemaker's boutiques, outstanding restaurants and cafes. For me the best part of Florence is sitting somewhere in this area in a piazza, having an ice cream and a coffee, speaking with locals and enjoying the local side of the city.

A quick lunch with a drink in the city center costs around €25-€30, and a full dinner starts at about €50. Museums and attractions are reasonably priced, with major sites like the Uffizi Gallery or the Accademia being a bit higher. Entry fees for most museums and landmarks range from €10-€30.
How can I get around Florence?
Getting around Florence is easy and convenient. The city center is compact and highly walkable, with most major attractions located within a short distance of each other. For longer trips, the local bus and tram systems are reliable and affordable, with tickets costing around €1.70 for 90 minutes of travel. You can purchase tickets at tabaccherie (tobacco shops), kiosks, or through mobile apps. Taxis are also available but must be called in advance or found at designated stands.
What options does Florence have for those with dietary restrictions?
Florence is quite accommodating for those with dietary restrictions. Many restaurants and cafes offer vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, often marked on their menus. Traditional Tuscan cuisine includes simple dishes that can be adapted, such as ribollita (a vegetable and bread soup) or pasta with olive oil and seasonal vegetables. For those with allergies, it's helpful to inform the staff, as they are generally attentive and willing to accommodate special requests.
How long should I stay in Florence?
We recommend staying at least two nights in Florence to appreciate its incredible cultural treasures fully. Adding a third night is a great idea, giving you time for a day trip to explore the beauty of Tuscany.
Is Florence safe?
Florence is generally a very safe city for travelers. The main areas, especially around the historic center, are well-lit and monitored. Like any popular tourist destination, petty crimes such as pickpocketing can occur, particularly in crowded spots like train stations or busy attractions. Staying alert and keeping your belongings secure will help you avoid issues
What are some tips for visiting Florence with mobility issues?
Florence is a historic city with some challenges for visitors with mobility issues, due to narrow cobblestone streets and uneven terrain. Many major attractions, such as the Accademia Gallery, Uffizi Gallery, and Florence Cathedral, offer accessible entrances and some wheelchair access. Accessible taxis can be arranged in advance. For a more comfortable visit, consider renting a wheelchair, and exploring less crowded areas like Piazzale Michelangelo or the Giardino delle Rose. Always plan ahead and confirm accessibility details with your travel expert.
