Will I have to pay the Venice Access Fee?
The Venice Access Fee is charged to day visitors only, and only on peak days. As an overnight visitor you are exempt from the fee, although you do have to register yourself on the Venezia Unica website. Your local JayWay contact will let you know if you are staying on any of the peak days and advise you how to register. Once registered you will receive a QR code you should save to your phone to show in case you are asked.
Is there a danger of Venice flooding when I'm there?
While Venice can experience occasional flooding, particularly during the autumn and winter months, it is not something that happens every day. Floods are more common during high tides, especially in November, and they typically last for a few hours. The city has implemented flood prevention systems, including the MOSE project (Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico), which aims to protect Venice from rising sea levels and high tides by deploying barriers in the lagoon. Although the system is still being completed, it’s a significant step toward minimizing flooding risks. If you visit during a period of high tide, it's a good idea to keep an eye on the weather forecast and bring waterproof footwear, just in case. But in general, the chances of significant flooding during your visit are low.

In Venice, getting around is quite unique compared to other cities, as it’s a pedestrian city with canals instead of streets. Walking is the best way to explore the city’s charming streets, alleys, and squares. Venice is very walkable, and most major attractions are within walking distance of each other. Vaporetti (water buses) are the main public transport option and are commonly used to navigate the canals. They operate like buses and have a set route, with stops at key points along the Grand Canal and around the city. A single ride costs around €7.50, but there are multi-day passes available that offer savings for frequent travelers. There are also water taxis, but the price for a short-distance ride usually starts at around 50 EUR.
How can I get to Croatia from Venice?
To get to Croatia from Venice, you have several travel options. Certainly, the most dramatic method of getting to Croatia (to Rovinj, Poreč, or Pula in Istria) is by ferry. The ferry is a catamaran (high-speed ferry), so the under four-hour journey can be noisy and uncomfortable if you suffer from sea sickness. Ferries don't run every day, even in high season, and can be prone to cancellation. If you prefer a more reliable option, traveling by road to Rovinj, with a private transfer or shared shuttle service, would be a better choice.
