Ravello is the quintessential postcard image of Italy's Amalfi Coast. Elegant noble estates, jaw-dropping coastal scenery, cozy alleys in the historic center, colorful gardens, gourmet restaurants, quality shopping, and a vibrant artistic life. Known as the City of Music thanks to its yearly summer classical music festival, the town has welcomed artists and art lovers for centuries. Ravello is less crowded and more exclusive than nearby Positano and Amalfi, in no small part because Ravello is perched in the hills, 1,200 ft above sea level. Ravello isn't as convenient a base for the usual Amalfi Coast day trips, other than for scenic hikes, as its location can dramatically increase journey times. There are plenty of reasons to spend most of your time in Ravello, especially if you're staying at one of the luxury resort properties. Ravello's central piazza and the narrow alleys and streets surrounding it were made to be enjoyed and explored, while visits to the various gardens are a must.
