Glowing Reviews from Our Guests

Our trip was outstanding in every sense. With the pandemic as a background, and the need to make changes in the itinerary as we went, JayWay Travel could not have done a better job. Both Nico in the US and Enrico in Rome were outstanding. and we would definitely recommend JayWay Travel to our friends.

Frequently Asked Questions about travel to Matera
What are prices like in Matera?
Prices in Matera are generally more affordable compared to other popular Italian destinations. Dining out at local restaurants typically costs between €15 and €30 per person, depending on the type of restaurant and its location. Attractions, such as visiting the Sassi cave dwellings or local museums, are usually priced between €10 and €15.
How do I get around?
In Matera, the best way to get around is on foot, as the city is built into ancient cave dwellings, and many of its key attractions are within walking distance of each other. The narrow, winding streets of the Sassi area are best explored by walking, allowing you to fully appreciate the unique architecture and scenery. The most interesting historic attractions are located in the “Sassi”, a maze of tiny alleys and one-way only roads normally inaccessible to cars or in which driving your vehicle is extremely difficult. While the city center is compact, if you need to travel further, taxis are available, and there are also a few buses connecting the town to nearby areas. However, most visitors find walking to be the most enjoyable and convenient way to explore Matera.
Is the city safe? Are there any tips on things to avoid, or places where you should be careful?
Matera is generally a very safe city for tourists, with a low crime rate and a welcoming atmosphere. However, some areas of the historic center can feel a bit eerie after dark, due to the cave-like nature of the narrow alleys. It's important to be cautious when walking on uneven, cobbled streets, especially in the evening or after rain, as they can become slippery. While Matera is safe overall, it's still a good idea to keep an eye on your belongings in crowded places or on public transportation, as you would in any city. Overall, though, Matera is a peaceful and easy place to explore.
How many days should I spend in Matera?
In most cases, a half-day private walking tour followed by lunch in a charming cave-restaurant is enough to experience the atmosphere and explore the main historic sites. For a more immersive and enriching experience, especially for art and history enthusiasts, we recommend spending 2 to 3 nights in a unique cave-room hotel. This would include a half-day walking tour and a day trip to the surrounding countryside, traditional wineries, and remote villages, either with a rented car and guide or through a private excursion with a guide and driver.
