What we love about Hvar
Operations Executive
I would say that Hvar is one of my country's trendy islands and that is what makes it special! While walking around Hvar you can feel life! Yachts, boats, small islands, many restaurants, bars, clubs, local people, tourists and very often famous people can be found in the very center of Hvar. It's definitely Croatia's fanciest island.
Senior Trip Planner
Imagine a small Mediterranean town full of stone houses built close together and a sea so clear that you can see everything on the bottom, even in the harbor, and you'll have Hvar.
Team Leader for Greece & Turkey
Although for long time it had the "stigma" of being Croatia's party island, Hvar is much more. It's a perfect place to visit in early spring or late autumn, when it's not too busy, to experience the real island life, and to really enjoy what island has to offer. One thing that is a must in Hvar is wine! They make a lot of good wine, and you have to try as many as possible!

Frequently Asked Questions about travel to Hvar
How long should I stay in Hvar?
We recommend spending at least three nights in Hvar, especially if you're there during the summer.
How do I get to Hvar?
Hvar has two main ferry ports, in Hvar town and in Stari Grad. The passenger-only catamaran goes from Split's main port to Hvar town, where all of our accommodations are located. The catamaran takes just over an hour. Private boat transfers are a possibility, at a far greater cost. Hvar also has regular catamaran connections direct to Korcula and Dubrovnik and to Vis one day a week.
Where are Hvar's best beaches?
While there are a few beaches near the town itself (Amfora beach and the Hula Hula Beach Club are our two picks) by far the nicest beaches in the area are on the islands of the Pakleni archipelago. Read more in our Best Beaches in Hvar blog post.
How much should I expect to spend in Hvar?
A quick lunch with a drink, in the city center, is around 150 kuna/$20. Museums and landmarks cost between 10 and 50 kunas ($1.5 - $8). For a full dinner, budget at least 200 kunas/$30 each.
How can I get around Hvar?
Hvar town covers a small area, so walking around is pretty easy. You can also get a taxi from the stand next to the main bus station, or take an Uber, which tends to be a bit cheaper.
Can I rent a boat for a day without a license?
You’ll find a lot of agencies renting low-powered boats (up to 20hp) in Hvar without needing a boat license. Technically a boat navigation license is required in Croatia for any kind of boats but police on Hvar turn a blind eye. If you have limited experience (particularly to do with anchoring and docking) we strongly advise against renting a boat. You’ll have a more relaxing and equally enjoyable time on any of the group or private tours that we offer, on a boat that is faster, larger, and more stable.
What are typical opening hours in Hvar?
During the summer, galleries and museums are open daily, usually from 9 am - 1 pm and then from 5 pm - 11 pm. Most shops are open daily. Grocery stores are typically open from 7 am to 9 pm, although smaller stores sometimes take a break at midday.
Is Hvar safe?
Hvar is very safe, but we still recommend keeping an eye on your belongings on crowded beaches.
