Zagreb lies on the intersection between the Adriatic coast and Central Europe. It is the hub of Croatia's business, academic, cultural, artistic, and sporting worlds. Start with the Baroque atmosphere of Zagreb's Upper Town, but don't stop there. Check out the open-air markets, impressive architecture, museums, and tasty cuisine. Zagreb is a city of green parks and walks. It has a horseshoe of urban greenery that starts at Ban Josip Jelacic Square. There are also many places to visit in the city's beautiful surroundings.
A city with a million hearts. Zagreb has managed to preserve its soul as well as its cultural and historical heritage.
Gornji grad (Upper Town) and Donji grad (Lower Town) are the hubs of Zagreb. There you'll find most of the restaurants, bars, and tourist sights. Zagreb started as two medieval fortress towns overlooking the Sava River. It had a renaissance in the Baroque period, when it became a trading center thanks to its strategic location. Despite its bustle, Zagreb reveres its past. The city's mix of medieval towers, palaces, squares, and churches makes it a lovely place to explore. You'll love Zagreb, and we recommend it for any Croatian vacation. It's the perfect place to start or end an Adriatic trip.

What we love about Zagreb
Senior Trip Planner
As Croatia's capital, Zagreb is always very lively, but my favourite time in Zagreb is spring. As a very green city with lots of parks and people with flowers everywhere, it's an extremely beautiful time of year. Magnolia trees everywhere, their petals flying around on a light breeze, and the whole city living outside, on the streets, in cafes, markets, it's like everything wakes up at once. And, despite being a big city, Zagreb has the fragrance of the thousands of roses people plant in their yards and on their balconies.

Zagreb has a special vibe that always makes me feel like I'm home. There is always something going on, cool festivals (the burger one is awesome!), concerts, and exhibitions. I love walking in the parks in the city centre, cool cafes, and eating at the excellent restaurants with amazing local/fusion/international cuisine. Zagreb is a town where everybody can find something for themselves.

I've liked Zagreb from the very first time I visited, as it was a whole new world. Afterward, I lived there as a student and with the great memories I made there, I'm always happy to be back. Zagreb represents diversity, variety, freedom, culture and friends. I love its historic and mysterious Upper Town with so many stories linked to it. I like its parks, its cultural and art scene, its vibes. I equally enjoy sipping coffee in cozy cafes in winter or outside on the patio, watching passerby. I particularly like Zagreb in spring. I also love to eat štrukli, take a cable car to Sljeme mountain, and cycle or walk along the Sava River and its lakes.

Just came back from an 8-day trip through Croatia. I highly recommend using JayWay Travel for future trips. The ease of getting around four locations in Croatia meant we had more time to enjoy each place and not spend time figuring out travel schedules and options.

Frequently Asked Questions about travel to Zagreb
Is Zagreb worth visiting?
Most Croatia itineraries focus on the coast and islands. Zagreb itself has no particularly outstanding sights but it's a great city to get a taste of the classic Central European capitals of Budapest, Prague and even Vienna. The city's street-side cafes, bars and restaurants make for a warm, buzzing atmosphere. Zagreb is home to many museums and of course the national opera and theater. If you want to sample Croatian city life on your trip, a couple of days in Zagreb will be well spent.
How much should I expect to spend in Zagreb?
A proper meal with a drink costs between $15 and $20 per person. Tickets for museums vary between $3 and $6 per person.
How can I get around Zagreb?
The city center is relatively small, and you can visit the majority of city sights on foot. If you would like to see more than just the center, you can hop on one of Zagreb's blue trams and buses. To buy a ticket (valid for both trams and buses) go to a kiosk and ask for a half hour or hourlong ticket (priced at 4 or 10 HRK). Tickets can be bought from drivers, but these are more expensive (15 HRK). Please validate your ticket once you board (on the device located near the front entrance): an invalidated ticket is as good as worthless to a ticket inspector. You can also use Uber.
Is Zagreb safe?
Zagreb is quite safe, but watch your valuables in crowded areas.
How long should I stay in Zagreb?
We recommend at least two nights in this underrated city.
