Pécs is Hungary's hidden gem, an ancient city in the south, near the Croatian border. It originated as a Roman settlement more than 2,000 years ago, but it is most famous for its early Christian Mausoleum (now a UNESCO site) with frescoed tombs and the 11th century cathedral. In the 16th century, while under Turkish rule, Pecs gained the beautiful Mosque of Pasha Qasim, which has since become a church.

Pecs is such a charming university town with beautiful squares, medieval history, art, great food, and wine. I visited Pecs a few years ago with my family for the weekend and I was blown away. I would recommend the Zsolnay Cultural quarter where you can learn about heritage, craftsmanship, and more.

What are typical opening hours in Pecs?
Standard shop opening hours Monday to Friday are 10:00-18:00 and Saturday 10:00-13:00. Department stores usually open at 10:00, while grocery store, bakeries and supermarkets are open 07:00-20:00. Many shops open until 20:00 or 21:00 on Thursdays. Shops are closed on Sundays, except shopping malls. Museums are generally open from 10:00 to 18:00, and usually close on Mondays. Naturally, synagogues are closed Saturdays.
