Eger is Hungary's most famous wine town and a visit to the valley with its numerous wine caves carved into the rocky hillside is certainly a unique experience. Eger's charming town center should not be missed, complete with the Eger castle on the hill and its famous Dobo square, and we can help you see it with private walking tours, one focused on food and wine. This compact historical area can be easily seen on foot but you will have to take a cheap taxi ride out to the Valley, which is well worth the money.

What we love about Eger
I visited Eger for the first time when I was little and only recently had a chance to re-visit. I was amazed at the well-kept baroque style old town, the medieval fort, and the minaret towers that are left here from the time of the Ottoman Empire. Eger has a strong connection to winemaking and some of the best wineries in the country are located here. As a Hungarian, I am very proud of the city of Eger and I would be really happy to show it to all guests visiting Hungary. I would definitely advise spending a night here on your way to Romania or Slovakia.

While small, Eger offers many beautiful sights, while the surrounding area offers impressive wines and thermal baths. We recommend giving the city a night or two, depending on how much time you want to spend in the surrounding vineyards.

Standard opening hours for stores are 10:00-18:00 on weekdays, and 10:00-13:00 on Saturdays. Department stores usually open at 10:00, while grocery stores, bakeries, and supermarkets are open 07:00-20:00. Many shops are open until 20:00 or 21:00 on Thursdays. Outside of malls, shops are closed on Sundays. Museums are generally open from 10:00 to 18:00, and usually close on Mondays. Naturally, synagogues are closed Saturdays.
