Salzburg's Old Town is comprised of renowned baroque architecture, forming one of Europe's best-preserved town centers (complete with the continent's oldest restaurant). All of this, combined with the Alps as its backdrop, make Salzburg unforgettable. Salzburg's two claims to fame are as the birthplace of Mozart and the stage for The Sound of Music. Highlights of the city include the imposing Salzburg Cathedral and the Hohensalzburg Fortress, which dominate the city skyline.
A city of music, art and architecture. Salzburg is a baroque jewel in a spectacular alpine setting. Mozart and the Sound of Music come alive here.
Salzburg is as much known for its impressive natural surroundings as for its charming Old Town. No trip to Salzburg is complete without a visit to the unspoilt countryside nearby. This includes sights such as the Hellbrunn Palace. Further afield you'll find Berchtesgaden, home to Hitler's Eagle's Nest. Salzburg has a very festive atmosphere throughout the year. There are many classical music performances, outdoor summer festivals and a beautiful Christmas market. The Mirabell Palace is another must-see.
You can also find delicious Austrian cuisine throughout Salzburg. The local white wines as well as local beers are worth sampling. We recommend the atmospheric beer halls of the Augustiner brewery.

What we love about Salzburg
Sales Executive
The center of Salzburg has a small town vibe with jaw dropping hilltop views of the city and surrounding alpine foothills. As the hometown of Mozart, it is an amazing place to relax, enjoy some music and take in the sights.
Trip Planner
I like Salzburg's quaint, cultural and romantic atmosphere, the ever-present (and not just classical) music, beautiful landscapes, tasty, if somewhat heavy, cuisine and of course - the beer (it is the beer capital of Austria, after all).
Operations Training Specialist
Salzburg is definitely a true reflection of a stereotypical Austrian town - in a good way of course. It offers music, history, hospitality, and friendly people. My personal favourite part of Salzburg is the Salzach River which flows through it, and is the perfect opportunity for a relaxed walk in any time of the year or day.

Frequently Asked Questions about travel to Salzburg
Can I pay by card?
Credit cards are widely accepted in Salzburg, but we still recommend having 20 EUR/person/day in cash. You can take out Euros from the ATMs in the entrances to banks, or exchange other currencies at exchange offices.
How can I get around Salzburg?
Salzburg is relatively small compared to its outsized fame! It is easy to get around on foot. If you want to reach the elevations within the city limits, you can get Salzburg Card, which provides both discounts and free entry to some museums, as well as full usage of public transportation, including funiculars. Salzburg's bike infrastructure is fantastic, so consider renting a bike and riding down the Salzach river. The public transportation runs 24/7 and is very frequent, but the city's taxis are also affordable and safe.
When are the local shops and cultural hotspots open?
Salzburg's museums are generally open from 10 AM to at least 6 PM, but are usually closed on Mondays and public holidays. Concert halls offer acoustic experiences nearly every day. Shops open from the early morning until around 8 PM but close on Sundays. Souvenir shops await guests year round, but close in the late afternoon. Some restaurants close on Mondays.
How many days should I spend in Salzburg?
Salzburg calls for at least one full day, if not two (making for three nights in total). The small city is an excellent base for day trips into the Alps, to visit places like Hallstatt, the Eagle's Nest, salt mines, and more.
Is Salzburg safe?
Like any other place in Austria, Salzburg is very safe.
Can I eat well in Salzburg?
Salzburg is a paradise for foodies of every kind. Plenty of local restaurants, Italian style eateries, Asian-style bistros and Dalmatian taverns await you with tasty dishes. You won't struggle to find a restaurant fulfilling any dietary criteria and empty stomach
