Poland's alpine getaway.
Zakopane is Poland's most popular vacation destination, attracting three million visitors annually. Often referred to as Poland's winter capital, this town really has no off-season, as its hiking trails and world-class ski slopes make it a tourism destination year-round. There are numerous other outdoor activities available, such as climbing, ice skating, rafting, and paragliding. Many people just come to Zakopane because of the town's charming wooden architecture amidst majestic natural scenery. When walking around this magical place, you often feel like you have stepped back in time. Zakopane is deep in the heartland of the Gorals, Polish highlanders with their own dialect, cuisine, architecture, and history.
Route for Zakopane tour
The main thoroughfare, Krupowki Street, is home to many shops and street performers. But beyond this bustling street, you can find elegant wooden villas and mansions and several museums. Zakopane offers a true Polish dining experience, with good restaurants (some themed) offering hearty dishes that fit right in with the rustic surroundings. An ideal spot for a mountain vacation, Zakopane works well for those heading south from Krakow to Slovakia or Hungary, or just exploring Poland's diversity.

What we love about Zakopane

Igor

It's a great place to temporarily change the surroundings of large metropolises. In Zakopane, you can relax without doing much, besides enjoying the magnificent views and wonderful fresh air, or you can relax in a more active way, taking part in one of the pleasant hikes in the area of Cuisine. It should also be mentioned that you are sure to love the regional dishes in Zakopane!

Frequently Asked Questions about travel to Zakopane

How can I get around Zakopane?

Zakopane's main artery is Krupowki Street, a long pedestrian road flanked by loads of shops, restaurants, and bars, and near the hotels we recommend. At one end, you can ride a funicular to the peak of Mt. Gubalowka, which offers an amazing panorama of Zakopane and its neighbors. There are also frequent buses to popular trailheads and cable car stations, which depart from the other end of Krupowki, near the bus/train station.

How long should I stay in Zakopane?

Zakopane is small, so how long you stay depends on how much hiking you want to do. You could easily spend a week or more, but if it's just a stop as part of a longer tour, 1-2 nights tend to suffice, allowing you to enjoy some hiking (or at least views after funicular or cable car rides), and soak in some of its neighbor and unusual highlander architecture, art, and folklore.
