Custom tour packagesIschia
Intensely rugged Ischia is the largest island off the coast of Naples. Thanks to its volcanic past, this island offers stunning views and has been famous for its healing hot springs and mud since ancient times. Suffice it to say that some of its springs were consecrated by the Ancient Greeks. A short journey from Naples, Ischia offers a completely different atmosphere and experience. With its strategic location, the island is riddled with castles and watchtowers, including the Aragonese Castle, first built in 474 BC and expanded and refurbished over the centuries since.
Capri's less famous, more stunning neighbor.
If Ischia looks familiar, that may be because of its popularity in many American and Italian films, often as a stand-in for nearby Capri. We recommend climbing the island's towers to drink in its views, or hiking to the very top of the island for the most commanding vista, then drinking the wines coaxed from Ischia's rich volcanic soil, perhaps on a boat trip to areas and vistas inaccessible from land. Ischia attracts a mostly Italian crowd, whether that's locals taking weekend beach vacations from Naples and surroundings or from the rest of the country. You'll hear English spoken far less often than in other summer destinations. Ischia can comfortably and affordably deliver on your Italian seaside holiday dreams in a way that the more crowded locales of the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, and Capri can't.

Things to do in Ischia
First and foremost, Ischia is a beach destination. and the popular and busy towns of Casamicciola and Lacco Armeno have the largest beaches. Find a spot on the public beach or spring for loungers and an umbrella. Our advice though is to head for one of the beachfront thermal spas for a unique experience. If pure relaxation sounds like hard work there are plenty of things to see and do, from the Aragonese castle just off Ischia Porto to the strenuous hike to the top of Mt Epomeo in the middle of the island. The very best way to see all of Ischia however is on a surprisingly inexpensive private day trip by boat. Your skipper knows the best spots for swim stops, and lunch. The tiny island of Procida is a short ferry ride away, so you can check out Italy's Capital Of Culture from 2022. There are boat trips available to Capri, and ferries too.

Frequently Asked Questionsabout Travel to Ischia
How many days should I spend in Ischia?
We recommend spending at least two full days in Ischia to fully appreciate its stunning nature, beautiful beaches, and grottos, as well as to enjoy some time for boat trips in the area.
How much should I expect to spend per person per day in Ischia?
In Ischia, you can expect to spend around €50-€80 per person per day, depending on your preferences and activities. A budget-friendly day with a simple meal at a local trattoria and a visit to a few attractions might cost closer to the lower end, while dining at nicer restaurants, enjoying boat trips, or indulging in spa treatments can increase the daily cost.
How do I get around Ischia?
The best way to get around Ischia is by bus, as the island has a good public transportation network connecting major towns and attractions. You can also rent a scooter or car for more flexibility, especially if you want to explore remote beaches or villages. Taxis are available, but more expensive. For a unique experience, you can also take a boat to visit nearby areas or explore the coastline. Walking is a great option for exploring towns like Ischia Porto or Forio, where the historic centers are easily navigable on foot.
Where's best, easiest and safest to get some local currency?
The best, easiest, and safest way to get local currency in Italy is by using ATMs, which are widely available in cities and towns, including Ischia. Look for ATMs attached to banks for security. Avoid withdrawing from machines in isolated areas or those attached to non-bank institutions. Currency exchange offices or "bureaux de change" are also an option, especially in tourist areas, but they tend to offer less favorable rates. Some hotels and shops might exchange currency, but it's typically not the most economical option.
What are the typical opening hours for shops in Italy, including souvenir, clothing, and grocery stores? Are there days when most shops are closed, and are there any stores open 24/7?
In Ischia, shops generally open around 9:00 or 10:00 AM and close by 1:00 or 2:00 PM for a break before reopening from 4:00 PM to 7:00 or 8:00 PM. On Sundays and/or Mondays, many shops are closed, particularly in smaller areas, but tourist-focused shops may remain open. During the high season, stores tend to have longer hours, and some may stay open later in the evening. As for 24/7 stores, there are a few convenience stores or supermarkets in larger towns, but they are limited and typically only in more tourist-heavy areas.
Is the island safe?
es, Ischia is generally considered a safe destination for tourists. It has a low crime rate and is known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. As with any tourist location, it’s always a good idea to stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or when out at night. The island’s small size and laid-back nature also contribute to a sense of security.
What are the options for people with dietary restrictions and intolerances?
Ischia offers a variety of dining options for people with dietary restrictions and intolerances. Many restaurants on the island are familiar with gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, and dairy-free diets, and will often have specific menu items or can make adjustments to dishes. In larger towns, you’ll find specialized restaurants catering to these needs, and some places even offer organic or local produce options. It's always a good idea to inform the restaurant staff about your dietary requirements to ensure a safe and enjoyable meal.
