Meandering through Sibiu, you’ll wonder what century you've found yourself in. From its 15th century towers to the 16th century Bridge of Lies, you’ll lose yourself in the medieval atmosphere of the city. Sibiu is divided into the Upper Town and Lower Town. The Upper Town holds the most historic sights. The Lower Town has colorful buildings, and the city’s walls and defense towers. Traverse the beautiful Passage of Steps to move between the two. We recommend a city walking tour. Sibiu's squares, streets, and churches are all wonderful to explore. Then take a break at the Great Square, center of city life. Coming or going from Sibiu, providing you're going in summer, you’ll most likely travel the Transfagarasan Highway. These twists and turns crisscross the tallest sections of the Carpathian Mountains.
Walk this way for culture and charm. Pedestrian-friendly streets make Sibiu a stroller’s paradise.
Sibiu is home to many firsts. Printers here printed the first book in the Romanian language. Sibiu hosted the country’s first hospital and pharmacy. The city also houses Romania’s oldest museum, the Brukenthal Art Museum. To get a true taste of local life, pay a visit to the Cibin market. Then join the shoppers on Balcescu or Cetatii streets. Take a short bus or tram ride to the Astra Open Air Museum. Here you can discover the region’s technological and architectural legacy. Cultural heritage is important in Sibiu. The city hosts an Easter Fair, a Christmas Market, and a National Festival of Folk Traditions. Plus there's a Craftsmen’s Fair in August and a Pottery Fair in September. Sibiu is the perfect destination while on a tour of Romania, before or after Bucharest.

What we love about Sibiu
Trip Planner Team Leader
Sibiu is currently my favorite Romanian city. In my childhood, Brasov held that place, but Sibiu was fully restored in the early 2000s and then chosen as the European Capital of Culture in 2007. It has the medieval feel of other Transylvanian towns but also more charm, with certain buildings following the Viennese style of the late renaissance era. The Little Square and Big Square are cool, but the hidden passageways and stairways connecting upper & lower town really have “time travel” written over them. Last but not least, the food! In 2019, Sibiu was awarded the title of European Gastronomical Region. This is the pinnacle of Transylvanian cuisine, mixing Romanian, Hungarian and Saxon recipes.

Frequently Asked Questions about travel to Sibiu
How long should I stay in Sibiu?
We recommend spending at least two full days (3 nights) in Sibiu. Although the Old Town can be explored in just a few hours, there are many places to visit beyond the city, like the spectacular Gothic Corvin Castle, Transfagarasan Road, and villages with fortified Saxon churches.
What are Sibiu's must-see sights?
Located in the heart of the old walled city, The Great Square is a UNESCO-protected architectural site, home to some of Sibiu's most impressive buildings. The 13th century Council Tower offers incredible views of the Old Town, and Carpathians beyond. The Passage of Steps is a masterpiece from the 13th century, with twin staircases and archways connecting the Upper and Lower Towns. Huet Square has a mix of Gothic buildings, and is dominated by the Protestant cathedral.
