Torun

The beautifully preserved "Gingerbread City"

One of Poland's oldest cities, Torun was once also one of the largest, as evidenced by its plentiful Brick Gothic, Baroque, and Mannerist architecture. Fortunately, Torun escaped World War II intact, so everything in its center is original, down to Nicolaus Copernicus' birthplace. Torun's beautifully preserved, UNESCO-listed Old Town (with its massive cathedral) is the main reason to visit. Take your time exploring the center, its medieval Gothic buildings, walls, and towers (one of which is leaning) will reward you. Be sure to check out Torun's famed, elaborate gingerbread (which naturally has its own museum, where you can learn to bake it). The city isn't just known as "The Gingerbread City" due to its characteristic red brick architecture!

Route for Torun tour
Torun is fairly central, making it a natural stop between Gdansk and Poznan or Warsaw. Bydgoszcz makes for a natural, if hard to pronounce (the Germans called it "Bromberg") day trip from Torun, as does Chelmno, which also features a cute, quiet Old Town (the Chelmno Concentration Camp was located in another part of the country).

What I love about Torun

Igor

Team Leader for Central Europe & Baltic Region

There is a reason why the district of the medieval city of Toruń has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. A visit to this place is like a time capsule that takes you back to the historical period when knights and kings were a normal occurrence, some 700 years ago. With that in mind, it should be expected that Toruń will have a very contemporary atmosphere, because it is constantly gaining popularity among the best places to live in Poland, especially for those who want to leave behind the big city's hustle. It should also be noted that the center is surrounded by great, affordable restaurants.
