Custom tour packagesAgrigento
One of ancient Greece's leading colonies, Agrigento's population may have reached 800,000 inhabitants before being sacked by the Carthaginians in 406 BC. These prosperous founders certainly left their mark behind, with the UNESCO-listed Valley of the Temples (Valle dei Templi), one of the most impressive collections of ancient Greek art and architecture outside Greece itself. The area surrounding the "valley" (actually a scenic ridge) forms the world's largest archaeological site, covering several thousand acres. The Valley's home to seven temples (one of which is among the best preserved ancient Greek temples anywhere), many tombs, and a monument built to commemorate Romans killed in the Second Punic War. Agrigento's center certainly isn't lacking history either, with two churches dating back roughly 1,000 years.

With a car, there are some pleasant sights to see nearby, such as the beaches of San Leone, and excellent wineries, and places connected to The Godfather.
