1. Day 1 Arrival in Palermo

   Palermo doesn’t care if you like it. It’s the capital city of Sicily, and its biggest. Reminiscent in parts of Naples. It's not a place you'll find thronged with tourists, but the locals sure like to be outside. A hub of activity and a gridlock in rush hour and at weekends. Despite the order of the main avenues, the twisting lanes of the Centro Storico provide plenty of opportunities to get lost. Cheek by jowl here you will find grand palazzos (much of European royalty had their vacation palaces in Palermo) and scruffy tenements. Turn a corner in a grungy alley and you’re faced with an ornate fountain or pomp and circumstance statue. All of this provides a rich backdrop to your time in Palermo. Many have come before. The city was founded nearly 3,000 years ago and Palermo has truly been a crossroads of the great civilizations. Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Germans, Spanish, Bourbon, and finally Italian rulers have held dominion over the city and left their mark. Its international airport and busy seaport make it a great starting or finishing point for an exploration of Sicily.

   Upon arrival at Palermo airport, our driver will be waiting for you at the arrivals and will take you to the hotel in Palermo.

   

   Palermo by Night

   First glimpses of Palermo can be quite overwhelming; this loud and colorful city engages all of your senses at once. We suggest starting easy, with a nice drink and a meal in some of our favorite spots. Piazza Olivella (two steps from Teatro Massimo) is one of the main areas for shopping, food, and drinks. A small part of the square, known as the Champagneria, is one of the places where young people hang out. Piazza San Francesco and Via Paternostro are two vibrant areas full of bars and restaurants where you can get a feel for the Palermitan way of (night)life. Piazza Sant’Anna is the best square to enjoy a drink in summer and enjoy a favorite local past-time, people-watching, because the bars there put all of their tables outside.

2. Day 2 Your First Full Day in Palermo

   The Wonderful Mosaics of the Monreale Cathedral

   The cathedral in Monreale, a suburb of Palermo, is regarded as the most beautiful Norman church in Sicily. The mosaics were made with 2,200 kg of pure gold! The UNESCO-listed site is the jewel of the crown of Arab-Norman heritage, which includes a series of nine civil and religious structures dating from the era of the Norman kingdom of Sicily (1130-1194): two palaces, three churches, a cathedral, a bridge, as well as the cathedrals of Cefalú and Monreale. Collectively, they are an example of a social-cultural syncretism between Western, Islamic and Byzantine cultures on the island which gave rise to new concepts of space, structure and decoration. They also bear testimony to the fruitful coexistence of people of different origins and religions.

   Mondello, the Urban Beach of Real Palermitans

   The beach par excellence for Palermitans is the beautiful and historic seaside resort nestled between Monte Gallo and Monte Pellegrino. The beach is a nice spot for a sunset aperitif and a tasty dinner in one of the many local beachside eateries and no-frills restaurants. It is easily accessible from all locations in Palermo by taxi or rental car. The crystal clear waters, splendid panorama and clean area will make you enjoy a perfect day of relaxation and pure harmony.

3. Day 3 Traveling to Agrigento by Private Transfer / Arrival in Agrigento

   After breakfast, your driver will meet you at your hotel and transfer you to your accommodations in Agrigento, home to the ancient Valley of the Temples. The journey will take a little over 2.5 hours.

   One of ancient Greece's leading colonies, Agrigento's population may have reached 800,000 before being sacked by the Carthaginians in 406 BC. These prosperous founders certainly left their mark behind, with the UNESCO-listed Valley of the Temples (Valle dei Templi), one of the most impressive collections of ancient Greek art and architecture outside Greece itself. The area surrounding the "valley" (actually a scenic ridge) forms the world's largest archaeological site, covering several thousand acres. The Valley's home to seven temples (one of which is among the best preserved ancient Greek temples anywhere), many tombs, and a monument built to commemorate Romans killed in the Second Punic War. Agrigento's center certainly isn't lacking history either, with two churches dating back roughly 1,000 years.

4. Day 4 Traveling to Ragusa by Private Transfer / Arrival in Ragusa

   After breakfast, your driver will meet you at your hotel and take you to your accommodations in Ragusa, after a 3-hour drive. For an additional fee, we can arrange a stop in a winery so you can taste some typical Sicilian wines.

   There are two Ragusas (three if you count Dubrovnik, once also known by that name). Ragusa Ibla and Ragusa Superiore. Ragusa Ibla is the one you've seen in pictures and maybe the Inspector Montalbano books and TV series. Before the 1693 Sicily earthquake, the town of Ragusa was located on the site of the current Ragusa Superiore. After that was destroyed, a new town was built on the slightly lower neighboring hill, in the late Baroque style fashionable at the time. This is the town known as Ragusa Ibla. It's one of eight towns that make up the "Late Baroque Towns of the Noto Valley" UNESCO World Heritage listing. Fast forward to modern day, when a new town was built on the ruins of the original, and this is Ragusa Superiore, where most locals live. The rabbit warren of narrow streets and alleyways of Ibla is in stark contrast to those of Superiore. Superiore is a great place to avail yourself of all the conveniences of a modern town, as well as some excellent restaurants where you'll be the only foreigner, it doesn't have the same magic that Ragusa Ibla enjoys.

   Granita and Walk

   You have just arrived in Ragusa and settled in your hotel, and now you have a couple of hours to explore the city on your own. Where to go, where to start? Our suggestion is to walk around the city center a little bit and stop at Caffè Italia in Piazza San Giovanni and refresh with a lovely granita (a semi-frozen dessert made from sugar and water and offered in various flavors). This is the best place to try it in Ragusa, where their go-to flavors are coffee and pistachio. If you add some fresh whipped cream on top, then it's just a dream!

5. Day 5 Your First Full Day in Ragusa

   

   Ancient, Baroque, and Fascist Architecture Private Tour

   Ancient Ragusa's strange history is remains visible despite the 1693 earthquake that left the city in ruins. Peer past the Baroque buildings put down amidst the city's ruins, and you can still find traces of its Roman, Byzantine, Arab, and Norman rulers. The Baroque buildings may have brought the town its UNESCO World Heritage listing, but with this tour you'll also see the 20th century buildings designed by fascist architects when Upper and Lower Ragusa were united into one provincial capital in 1926. You'll witness the different steps in the development of Ragusa, from its upper reaches to its ancient pre-Roman center.

6. Day 6 Traveling to Siracusa by Private Transfer / Arrival in Siracusa

   

   Today it's time to head to Siracusa, an artistic gem. Along the way you'll stop at the splendid UNESCO-listed baroque cities of Noto and Modica. The drive itself takes a little over 1.5 hours, plus several hours for the stops.
   

   With a history stretching back 27 centuries, there's a lot to see and do both in and around Siracusa (also known as Syracuse). While the main, relatively modern, town of Siracusa itself isn't so impressive, the tiny island of Ortigia, occupying less than half a square mile, is the real thing. It's still a functioning town in its own right, with over 3,000 inhabitants, but is also UNESCO-listed. This is where you'll spend much of your time and where you'll stay. The Greeks found plenty to like when they set up home in what they first called Neapolis (new city), and by the 5th century BC it rivaled Athens itself in population. Although it is the hometown of Archimedes (who built extraordinary machines to defend the city from Roman besiegers) and the location of several ancient Greek ruins (and some Roman ones too), many come here to admire the Baroque architecture you'll find around the town. Like many places in Sicily, at the crossroads of so many empires and dominions, there are traces to be found of each of the civilizations that passed through Siracusa.

7. Day 7 Your First Full Day in Siracusa

8. Day 8 Your Second Full Day in Siracusa

These markets are perfect for sampling authentic breakfast fare such as arancini, ricotta-filled pastries, and fresh local fruit. For a truly memorable experience, visit Aromi di Sicilia, renowned for its commitment to using fresh, seasonal ingredients. The owners operate an organic farm, producing unique items like pink pepper and candied ginger. 9. Day 9 Traveling to Taormina by Private Transfer / Arrival in Taormina

   After breakfast, it's time to leave Siracusa, but plenty more adventures await: your next destination is Taormina, right below the unmistakable shape of the mighty Etna volcano. Your English-speaking driver will bring you directly to your accommodations in the center of Taormina for a relaxing afternoon, after a 1.5 hour drive. For an additional fee, we can arrange a stop either in Catania, to enjoy a street food tour, or to see Etna.

   Taormina is the most famous destination in Sicily, hosting actors and actresses in an atmosphere of glamor, luxury, and seaside relaxation. We recommend visiting the fascinating Greek theater, nestled in a splendid location with spectacular views of scenic beaches and the snow-capped volcanic Mt. Etna. Then take time for a walk among the picturesque medieval streets and go shopping for local handicrafts, which include coral, lace, ceramics, and sweets.
