Parga is a wonderful base for day trips throughout the surrounding region. Although part of the mainland, this resort town has an insular feel. The legendary entrance to the underworld was said to lie nearby. Visit the likely site of the Nekromanteion, a temple used for communicating with the dead, built near three of the rivers that entered the underworld. Charon may not ferry souls to Hades across the Acheron, but that river remains a place of astonishing natural beauty, great for hiking, canoeing, rafting, or horseback riding. The nearby village of Syvota is Greece's own piece of the Caribbean, with its exotic coves, verdant islets, and clean azure waters making it one of Greece's most captivating spots.
