As the name (meaning "high in the air") implies, Meteora seems suspended in space. The six UNESCO-listed monasteries (some dating as far back as the 11th century) sitting above dramatic rocky pillars are Greece's second most important pilgrimage destination after Mount Athos. The views here are breathtaking, and can seem hard to believe, attracting tourists and film crews alike. Inside, you'll find a rich collection of artifacts explaining the last thousand years of events and belief. Beyond, explore the region's rugged landscape, whether hiking from monastery to monastery, or ascending the surrounding peaks.
Things to do in Meteora
After centuries of raids and conquests, Meteora's surviving six monasteries have been fully restored, and await curious visitors and pilgrims. Embark on a journey to explore the uniqueness of the monastic life demonstrated by the rich collection of artifacts housed inside these impressive monasteries. At sunset climb up to one of Meteora’s mountain peaks and watch nature perform its magic, as the sky turns yellow, orange and red.
The region’s rugged landscape attracts outdoor enthusiasts seeking adrenaline pumping activities as well as leisurely hikes. There are numerous hiking paths in the area which lead from one monastery to the next. Spending a day in nature is sure to work up an appetite, so be sure to enjoy the area's cuisine, especially its casseroles, stews, and eggplant dishes.

What we love about Meteora
Team Leader for Central Europe & Baltic Region
You have to see it to believe it. Pictures really don't do justice to this place. As a movie buff, I was sold on the idea of visiting Meteora after hearing that one of James Bond's films was shot there, but in hindsight, I can say that it's just the icing on the cake. This is definitely one of the most unique places I've been to in all of the world.
