What we love about Plovdiv
I like how Plovdiv’s Old Town is split into an upper and lower section. The lower part is called Kapana, which translates to “The Trap,” for its maze-like little streets. Nowadays, The Trap consists of eating or drinking too much, as the area is full of bistros and cafes. From an architectural perspective though, the highlight for me is to walk down Stoyan Chomakov Street and admire its many colorful Bulgarian-Revival houses, recently restored and turned into museums. My favorite building was the Ethnographic Museum, both inside and outside, but the painted facades of House Hindliyan, Balabanov or Atanas Krastev are maybe just as gorgeous and culturally valuable.

How long should I stay in Plovdiv?
We recommend spending a night in Plovdiv. You need up to a full day to visit the Old Town without rushing, but you can explore some of it once you arrive, then better get to know it the following morning via a walking tour.
What are Plovdiv's must-see sights?
Kapana is a small arts district within the Old Town feature plenty of art galleries, artisans, cafes, and restaurants. As for historic sites, you should visit the Roman Stadium, Dzhumaya Mosque, Assumption Church and the Roman Amphitheater. Then walk up Stoyan Chomakov Street and admire 19th century Bulgarian Revival architecture, especially the building housing the Ethnographic Museum and the Atanas Krastev House. At the end of the street, you'll find the hilltop Nebet Tepe hilltop archeological site (parts of which date back to the Thracians who founded the city before the first ancient Greek colonists arrived), and great views of the city.
