What we love about Danube Delta
Trip Planner Team Leader
Tulcea town isn’t necessarily beautiful, but for me, it’s definitely the gateway to paradise. That paradise is the Danube Delta. No matter how many imposing castles, medieval towns, or gorgeous mountains Romania has, almost everything pales somewhat in comparison to the delta. The UNESCO listed Danube Delta is the world’s 3rd largest biosphere, surpassed only by The Great Barrier Reef or Galapagos Islands and it’s also the best preserved Delta in Europe. Out of all my JayWay research trips, the delta boat tour will forever be in my heart. The numerous colorful birds, the old lotca fishing boats, the endless canals, lush Mediterranean vegetation, lunch in a gorgeous remote fishing village…Last but not least, the inner island of Letea and its wild horses, virgin national forest and sand dunes. Mother Nature’s diversity over such a small geographical area is unbelievable!

I greatly appreciate that JayWay was able to customize the trip so that I could visit the village my Grandparents came from. They are extremely flexible and do not sell just a canned trip.

Frequently Asked Questions about travel to Danube Delta
How long should I stay in the Danube Delta?
We recommend spending one full day in the Danube Delta (two nights). It's best to take a full-day boat tour with an expert local guide, as the delta's villages themselves have little to offer. This is the best way to experience this incredible destination first-hand. You will go through the delta's channels, and see white and yellow water lilies, swans, coot, ducks, geese, spoonbills, ibises, pelicans and many other flora and fauna. You can also take a boat to the Letea Forest, Europe's northernmost subtropical forest. In addition to many species of orchids, the forest is still home to herds of wild horses. If very strong winds cancel your boat tour, we recommend visiting local fortresses, like the medieval Enisala castle, or the Greek colon/Roman fort of Histria, once known as Histriopolis.
Is a boat tour of the Danube Delta still possible during bad weather?
Our boat tour of the Danube Delta isn't available when there are high winds. We'll keep track of the weather, but if need be, we can offer alternative activities, such as visiting the region's citadels, such as Histria and Enisala.
