Itinerary

1. Day 1 Arrival in Lisbon

   The capital of Portugal since 1255 when King Alphonse II moved the court from Coimbra, Lisbon is not only regarded as one of the sunniest of the European capitals but one with a rich history on display. The soft white limestone facades of the oldest neighborhood, Alfama, welcome tourists, and locals, calling to them through the medium of Fado music drifting wistfully from the abundance of bars, or the smell of petisco (Portuguese tapas) wafting from a myriad of restaurants. Like its ancient rival Porto, Lisbon rests on mighty rivers originating from the eastern Spanish highlands. Remnants of human settlements in the vicinity of the city date back to the Neolithic period and since that time successful invasions have resulted in occupation by Carthaginians, Romans, Suebi, Visigoths, and Moors. The rich tapestry of Lisbon’s history has been woven into the very fabric of the city.

   We'll arrange for a driver to meet you at Lisbon's airport and take you to your centrally located accommodation. The duration of the drive is about 20 minutes.

   

   First Steps in the City

   Upon your arrival in Lisbon, the optimal way to acquaint yourself with the city is by strolling to Praça do Comércio and exploring the elegantly reconstructed Baixa neighborhood, which emerged after the earthquake. For a direct route to the Bairro Alto and Chiado, the most bohemian districts with lively nightlife and top-notch restaurants, take a ride on the Santa Justa elevator, an iron structure dating back to 1902.

2. Day 2 Your First Full Day in Lisbon

   

   Lisbon Roots – Food & Cultural Walk Group Tour

   This tour takes you off the beaten track to get a unique glimpse into the fascinating history of ancient Lisbon. You will walk through two very ancient neighborhoods: Mouraria and Downtown. Along the stroll, you will experience the authentic and local vibe; simultaneously, you will taste what the locals taste and the places they enjoy daily. You will be taken from the historical Lisbon of the 12th century until now. In a stroll by the off-beaten-path, you will find out why Mouraria is such a unique place - the birthplace of the Fado music and the most multicultural neighborhood in Lisbon. 6 stops are included for you to be introduced to very local areas and to taste the icons and staples of Portuguese food culture and its influences.

   Visit the Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa)

   Established in the 12th century, the Lisbon Cathedral is the city's oldest church, embodying a rich tapestry of architectural styles spanning from the characteristic Latin to Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical. Originally serving as a fortress and defensive base, the cathedral has evolved over time and presently serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Lisbon. This historic edifice tells a captivating tale of Lisbon's architectural evolution and its enduring role in the city's religious and defensive history.

3. Day 3 Your Second Full Day in Lisbon

   

   Sintra & Cascais Small Group Tour

   On this tour, you will head towards Sintra Mountain and start the day by visiting the fantastic Sintra village. You will have some free time to explore the town. Next, it is time to cross the mystic mountain of Sintra towards the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to see the quaint Colares village and learn more about local wines dating back to the 13th century. You will also stop at a midpoint in the wild Cabo da Roca. After a lunch break, you'll enjoy beautiful roads toward Cascais, a former fishing village. Then, you'll go to the Pena Palace. Then, it will be time to head back to Lisbon.

4. Day 4 Your Third Full Day in Lisbon

   

   Take a Sunset Cruise

   The Tagus River holds the distinction of being the longest river in both Portugal and Spain. Embracing your partner while cruising on the water as the sun sets is undeniably the most romantic experience. This journey provides a unique perspective on Lisbon's renowned landmarks, such as the vibrant Praça do Comércio square, the dome of the National Pantheon, the 25 de Abril Bridge, and the Belem Tower.

   Admire Lisbon's UNESCO Sites

   A two-part UNESCO listing combines the monastery of the Hieronymites and the Tower of Belem. Constructed to commemorate Portugal's illustrious Age of Exploration, the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos holds significant historical value. It served as Vasco da Gama's lodging on the eve of his journey to the Far East. A highly frequented destination in Lisbon, the site is deservedly popular. The distinctive Church of Santa Maria features a single nave supported by six exquisitely crafted columns and serves as the final resting place for Vasco da Gama and Luis de Camoes. The two-story cloister of the Jeronimos Monastery is a masterpiece in itself, showcasing remarkable artistry. Don't miss the opportunity to delve into the monastery's history in dedicated halls.

   
   

   Standing as the city's most iconic feature, the Belem Tower is said to be the final sight witnessed by adventurers like Vasco da Gama as they set sail into the Atlantic Ocean. The true allure of the tower lies in its intricate exterior stone carvings, although the monument's interior is somewhat minimalistic. While there are pleasant views from the tower's summit, we suggest ascending the nearby Padrao dos Descobrimentos monument for even more spectacular vistas.

5. Day 5 Traveling to Lagos by Rental Car / Arrival in Lagos

   

   Today, after picking up your rental car from our partner's downtown office, you'll drive from Lisbon to Lagos, a scenic journey that takes about 3 hours, depending on traffic. Along the way, we recommend a stop in Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage city famous for its Roman ruins, medieval walls, and charming streets. It’s a slight detour but well worth the visit if you'd like to add some history and culture to your journey. Be sure to explore the Temple of Diana, stroll through the picturesque historic center, and soak in the town’s rich heritage before continuing on to Lagos.

   You’ll likely arrive in Lagos later in the afternoon, just in time to check in to your accommodation. Afterward, relax and unwind, enjoying the scenic surroundings. If you feel like it, take a peaceful evening stroll through the charming streets of Lagos, soaking in the coastal beauty and vibrant atmosphere.

6. Day 6 Your First Full Day in Lagos

   

   Boat Group Tour to Benagil Caves with Catamaran

   Set off on a comfortable catamaran adventure to Benagil, complete with shaded seating, bathroom facilities, and an observation deck. 9. Day 9 Departure Day

   Today, you'll depart from Lagos and drive to Lisbon Airport for your return flight. The drive from Lagos to Lisbon Airport takes around 3.5 hours, depending on traffic, so please make sure to allow enough time before your flight departure. Upon arrival at the airport, simply drop off your rental car at the designated rental car drop-off area. Afterward, you'll have plenty of time to check in and prepare for your flight.
