Route for Ljubljana, Rovinj, Bovec tour
Few experiences can be as liberating as driving across the beauties of Europe's lesser-known gems. This 10-day itinerary is ideal for anyone dreaming of a slow, self-drive journey, starting in Ljubljana, one of the most beautiful European capitals. While there, you'll catch epic views from the city's uphill castle, walk along charming streets, and visit the iconic Lake Bled. You'll then drive to Croatia, and more specifically, the stunning coastal region of Istria, where you can go black truffle hunting and taste local delicacies. Back to Slovenia for your last stop, Bovec, a quaint town surrounded by the Julian Alps. This is the perfect place to go kayaking or hiking before you drive back to Ljubljana. One of our team members will be available to assist with any questions and help arrange local services both before and during your trip. You'll receive access to your personalized Guest Page, featuring practical travel information, curated recommendations, and insider tips on everything from sightseeing and dining to local customs and etiquette. Upon request, we can also provide an eSIM with data service, making it easy to stay connected with your local JayWay contact throughout your travels. Across all destinations, we offer a carefully selected range of 3- to 5-star accommodations, including boutique hotels and character-filled guesthouses, all chosen for their comfort, quality, central locations, and authentic local atmosphere.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 Arrival in Ljubljana

Ljubljana enjoys a central position, making it the ideal base for exploring the rest of Slovenia. It is a crossroads culturally due to its location. On one hand, you can see its Central European influences, because of its time within the Austro-Hungarian empire, in the city's architecture and language. On the other hand there is a strong Mediterranean and Balkan influence which is brought out in their laid back approach and the city's café culture. People are often surprised how westernized and advanced Slovenia is putting it more in a class with its Austrian neighbors than its Eastern European and Balkan counterparts. The surrounding areas of the city are packed with natural beauty and cultural sights bearing witness to the city's dynamic history. There is diverse range of places to satisfy culinary desires as the local cuisine is also heavily influenced by its neighbors in all directions. Wine lovers will find Slovenia to be a hidden gem. One of the best ways we have found to get to know Ljubljana and Slovenian cuisine at the same time is on a food tour, which will take you on a gastronomic tour of the whole country while walking around the center. The city layout is tourist friendly as the Old Town has an ever expanding pedestrian zone and a great way to see Ljubljana is by bike taking advantage of the numerous bike lanes spread out across the city.
When you arrive at Ljubljana's airport, you'll be greeted and taken to your centrally located accommodation. Duration of the drive is about 30 minutes.
Castle Views and a Lovely Dinner

Castle Views and a Lovely Dinner

Start your stay in Ljubljana by taking a funicular or a short walk to reach Ljubljana Castle, offering stunning views of the city below and the mountains beyond. Don't miss the museum, and if possible, catch a sunset from the castle grounds, especially the tower. End your day on a high note with dinner in one of the charming restaurants within the castle walls. We are confident that you'll go to bed feeling happy and in love with "the loved one," the literal translation of "Ljubljana." On the other hand, if you're still experiencing jet lag and seeking complete relaxation before your upcoming adventures, we recommend taking a short walk by the Ljubljanica River and having dinner at Julija Restaurant. Remember to make a reservation or let your local destination expert handle it for you; they will be delighted to assist!

  4. Day 4 Traveling to Rovinj by Rental Car / Arrival in Rovinj

Rovinj by Car Rental with Stops in Postojna and Predjama
A morning start is recommended for your drive to Rovinj as there are some fascinating stops along the way. About halfway there, we suggest touring the Postojna caves as well as visiting the nearby Predjama Castle. Built into the side of a cliff, it is a truly marvelous sight. Duration of the direct drive to Rovinj is just over 2 hours.
Rovinj used to go by Rovigno, and to Italian-speakers it still does. This city was once part of the Republic of Venice, which is evident from the street names in Italian to the Venetian architectural flourishes, such as the bell tower that crowns the town. This laid-back spot has a full cultural calendar, with numerous festivals taking place in the warmer months. We’ll help you get to know the local culture, with possible activities like a local wine tasting, a fish cooking masterclass with a local chef, or a truffle hunting adventure in nearby Croatia. Then, to work up an appetite for your next delicious meal, you could rent bikes and cruise through the breathtaking Zlatni Rt Park. You’ll definitely want to visit the local market too. History buffs will love visiting the local cultural heritage museum, which gives great insight into the region. When you’re ready to get in the car, a day trip to Pula is always fun. This busy port town hosts a large market packed with delectable local specialities, and also boasts a Roman amphitheater. You could even arrange a full-day private tour through the gorgeous region of Istria, where more delights await you inland.
After your sightseeing stops, you'll probably arrive in Rovinj in the late afternoon, a good time to check in to your accommodation. Relax after your drive with an evening stroll around Old Town and the lively harbor area.

    Local Flavors

    Local Flavors

Looking to get into the true local spirit of Rovinj? At the city market square you can find fresh fruit and vegetable from local producers, as well as some Istrian specialties: olive oil, truffles, herbs, asparagus and local brandy. There is also a fish market, butcher’s shop and bakery there, having fresh goods daily. The best time to visit the market is early in the morning when locals are buying their vegetables and fruits for the day, and the cooks from the restaurants are searching for the best ingredients. Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and the colorful place, talk with the locals and buy some fresh ingredients. You will take great photos and have a wonderful time.

  7. Day 7 Traveling to Bovec by Rental Car / Arrival in Bovec

    Julian Alps by Rental Car
Today you'll be driving to the Julian Alps. We'd suggest making it a full-day drive and taking advantage of the many interesting stops along the way. The WWI cemetery in Kobarid is a great place to start, and there are numerous other important sites here for history buffs. From Kobarid it takes less then 30 minutes to reach the Tolmin river bed, a famous natural attraction. From there, we suggest stopping in Trieste, but on the way to Trieste you should check out Most Na Soci, as the entire area is very scenic. From Trieste (where you will need at least 2 hours) you can drive again through Slovenia where we suggest stopping in Piran, a small coastal town. From Rovinj it takes only 1.5 hours to reach Piran. The Kozlovic Winery is also on the way. It's one of the most famous wineries in Istria, with a great view from the outside terrace. Duration of the direct drive without stops is about 4 hours.

For travelers who like spending time in nature, it doesn't really get any better than The Julian Alps. This mountain range in northwestern Slovenia offers a wealth of picture-perfect landscapes, pristine hiking trails, rafting opportunities and much more. It's the perfect destination for a holiday that combines outdoor activities with relaxation. From hiking and swimming to rafting and cycling, there's more than enough to make your stay unforgettable. Besides the natural wonders, some of Slovenia's most notable towns are located in the region, including the beautiful Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj, and the historic Fort Kluze. You will also have ample opportunities to enjoy the local cuisine, which features plenty of freshwater fish. The Edenic beauty of The Julian Alps will charm you, and the local hospitality will allow you to tailor your stay here to your own interests, whether that's conquering mountain peaks, or floating blissfully on one of the many emerald-green lakes and rivers.
We will advise on how best to reach your accommodation in the Julian Alps, and where to park.
