You wouldn't quite think so by looking at it, but a thousand years ago, Amalfi was the capital of a powerful maritime republic, and rival to Pisa and Genoa. Sackings and a tsunami destroyed most of the oldest buildings, though the medieval cathedral survived. Constructed by the Normans, it blends Byzantine and Northern architectural and decorative styles. Nowadays, along with Positano, Amalfi is one of the busiest towns on the Amalfi Coast, and a good jumping off point for trips to the other towns by road or boat.

Amalfi's signature lemons, longer and larger than regular lemons, are a key ingredient in the locally produced limoncello and a digestif shot is almost compulsory after any meal. A little way from the center of town you can learn about another famous Amalfi product in the paper mill museum. Known worldwide for its quality, Amalfi's thick handmade paper was one of the first produced in Europe, the Amalfitani having learned the techniques from the Arabs they traded with.
